Who was James?

James, the son of Zebedee, was one of the Twelve Apostles and the brother of John, with whom he was nicknamed the "Sons of Thunder" by Jesus. He was a member of Jesus's inner circle, present at the Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. James was the first apostle to be martyred, executed by order of King Herod Agrippa around 44 AD, as recorded in the Book of Acts.
