Who was Samuel?

Samuel was an Old Testament prophet, judge, and leader who was called by God as a child and became a key figure in Israel's transition from a tribal confederation to a monarchy. He anointed both Saul, the first king, and David, who would succeed Saul. He was a faithful and just judge who guided the Israelites to worship God and famously led them to a significant victory against the Philistines. 

Sources estimate Samuel's birth to be around 1100 B.C, and his death to be around 1012 B.C.
